EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced-based form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic or stressful memories. EMDR therapy was developed in the late 1980s and has evolved into a highly effective treatment. From research, we know that past traumatic experiences continue to cause distress because the traumatic memory was inadequately processed. EMDR aims to reduce this distress and strengthen more helpful beliefs related to the traumatic event.

Unlike traditional forms of talk therapy, EMDR focuses directly on the memory and is intended to change how the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating problematic symptoms. The core of EMDR involves focusing on the traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (side-to-side eye movements guided by the therapist). This process helps the brain process the memories and reduce their adverse effects.

How EMDR Can Be Helpful
EMDR therapy has proven effective for individuals suffering from trauma or PTSD, and its applications have expanded to include treatment for anxiety, depression, panic disorders, eating disorders, and other stress-related issues. The therapy helps diminish the power of emotionally charged memories of past traumatic events. Research has shown that EMDR can accelerate the healing process by resolving the impact of past traumas at a faster rate than traditional talk therapy.
Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR therapy is beneficial for both adults and children who have experienced trauma. This includes but is not limited to survivors of:
-
Severe accidents
-
Sexual assault
-
Domestic violence
-
Combat stress
-
Crime
-
Fire
-
Severe illness or medical procedures
People who suffer from phobias, anxiety, depression linked to past traumatic experiences, or other conditions stemming from adverse life experiences may also find relief through EMDR therapy.
Is EMDR Right for You?
Choosing the right therapeutic approach is crucial for effective treatment. EMDR is particularly suited for individuals who have found little relief from traditional therapy for trauma-related conditions or those who wish to explore a different approach. If you find yourself continually impacted by past traumatic memories with recurring emotional pain, or if traditional therapies have not been effective, EMDR might offer the breakthrough you're seeking. We can discuss your therapy goals, past mental health treatments, and any concerns about EMDR to make an informed decision.
